Bucket List
I cannot tell you how eventful this past week has been. For one, I turned 26. It finally happened, I hit the ripe old age of 2-6 and it feels good. In all of my days, I have never felt so loved. My friends, co-workers, family and boyfriend spared nothing in making me feel like the most blessed girl ever and I cannot get over how thankful I am to have each of them in my life. Anyway, I will save all of those special celebrations for another post... but for now, I want to share with you the biggest news of my 26th year (so far) and that is my completion of the MetroPCS 2010 Dallas White Rock 1/2 marathon. For those of you that know me well...yes, I am serious.
You heard me – I completed, ran every step, finished, a 13.1-mile course. Because, hey, nothing says "26" like running half of your age...
This, coming from the girl that as of June 1st could not successfully run one mile without stopping and/or whining. My two crazy friends and I started training in the earlier part of September and have wrestled with training fatigue, ailing bodies and all-around frustration. We have each held each other up when the other didn’t want to be prodded along and have let other “helpers” encourage us along the way. I, personally, sought special treatment from a certain someone (read: Brad) that slowed down their pace by 3 minutes per mile, listened to me complain (specifically, "I hate this.") and continued to feed me positive encouragement in spite of it. I mean, I wouldn’t even deal with myself!
All of this to say, the three of us embraced the "race culture," worked through the cold and ran home to victory. I think we all felt a sense of accomplishment that was bigger than imagined and agreed that it was well worth it. I've never taken the chance to push myself to a point where I could actually take pride in it and yesterday, when I laid my head on my pillow, I felt like I had earned it. I had earned a small bit of affirmation and an even larger belief in the fact that I can really do anything if I set my mind to it. So much of this goal was a mental hurdle and it feels good to have scaled it. To those of you that helped, cheered, and encouraged – thank you! I couldn’t have done this without any of you and my heart swells when I think of yesterday and all of your sweetness...
And so here we are - a few pics* to prove it!

"I'm gonna kick, strech, annnnnnd kick!"
Did I tell you guys that I was on an adult Tuesday night co-ed kickball team? Yes, you read that right. Kickball...co-ed...adult. A little back history, our team formed at the end of last Summer in an attempt to join the ranks of the Dallas Social Sports softball league. Let's just say that our hopes of coming out on top were high and our crushed dreams were even higher by the end of that season. In an attempt to find our social sports niche, The Beers? (apparently it's a Flight of the Conchords reference, that's what you get when you let guys name your team) have gone through three different sports, spanning three different seasons to find our sweet spot. We finally found glory in a sport that we could all play with a little gusto, while simultaneously having fun.
And that, my friends, is kickball.
Believe me, I had my reservations. We have had our fair share of ups and downs this season, however, during Tuesday night's game I looked around and realized that everyone was really into it. And by really into it, I mean that two girls came out with grass burns, one guy on our team was not only challenging our referee (who he lovingly referred to as "Jeff Gordon") all the while the rest of us were engaging in heated amounts of trash talk between the other team. You could just feel the intensity. Blood was flowing, emotions ran high and we felt good. Now, before you guys think that I've taken a turn for the worse between March Madness and kickball playoffs I will assure you that everything is in balance (I think that the girls-only Saturday combo of red wine/New Moon helps with that). I am happy to report that we ended our season on Tuesday with a loss and a promise that we'll get 'em next time.
My friends, we've only just begun.
Here are two not-so-great pictures of our team on Tuesday night. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the 2010 co-ed third place team (out of four - ha!), The Beers?

G-chat Trash Talk

I don't know about you, but this March Madness has made everyone I know a little...well, mad. I joined an all-girls bracket and have let the rush of the tournament go straight to my head. We each joined in the pool with a $20 gift certificate to the store or restaurant of our liking. Because like they say, "hell hath no fury like girls competing for Anthro gift cards!" I mean, I'm exploring a whole new side of myself with message boards, to-the-minute scores and live streaming. It's a rush.
All of this to say, I have filled my Friday with an average amount of fist pumping and a whole lot of trash talking. Below is a conversation I found myself in with my friend Bailey. Don't let the torment of tiny bangs and mid-calf capris fool you, we really are good friends; good friends on a mission for gift cards and free meals. You're going down, Frerich.
me: hahaha - i replied all...
Bailey: replied all?
me: to your precious message board
Bailey: i thought it was blocked?
me: i have my ways :)
Bailey: like how you picked dominion?
me: dawg, that was all my braaaaain
Bailey: boooogus
me: ok, you're right. that was all T-rog...
Bailey: he's really going to enjoy all those anthro gift cards
Bailey: my cousin is michael jordan maybe i should have had him help me.
...
Bailey: i'm sad you won't be at din din tonight, that way i could punch you in the gut
and then pull your throat
me: i know! i want nothing more than to scissor kick you and then give you bangs
Bailey: hahahaha
me: tiny bangs
Bailey: i'd cut your tunic...oh wait*
me: haha - i'd steal your roommate and then scratch on your windows at night
me: haha - i'd steal your roommate and then scratch on your windows at night
Bailey: i'd cut your jeans into mid calf capris
me: i'd glue shape ups to your feet
Bailey: and shave your head bc i know how you really like short hair
me: i'd give you tattoos of tears on your cheek, write thug life on your knuckles and then make you go to dinner w/ ... (you'd rather have the tattoos, wouldn't you?)
Bailey: and give the birds in your neighborhood tiny bird enemas and then capture them and put them in your house.**
Bailey: i would literally rather have a tattoo that said fabulous on my forehead
me: hahaha - in old english script?
Bailey: preferably sign language drawings
*I had borrowed her tunic for the day...
**We've had some bizarre bird occurrences this past week. They're going loco on everything in Dallas!

She get it from her Mama
Not only is this little girl precious in her trench coat, but something tells me that one day she'll realize just how fun the camera can be and pose like the rest of us...
I saw this photo today and it reminded me so much of the day when I used to hide into my Mom for photos. Surprisingly enough, I was the quiet type in my earlier years. I would gab in front of the family for hours and then a newbie would come on the scene and I would clam right up.
I know, I know...shocking.
One of the funnier stories of my shy and delicate ways was when my Mom and her close friend helped "coach" our little girl coach pitch team. If it tells you anything, some of my favorite parts of my little league days were the outfits and the post-game juice boxes. I would just get so hot out there, and who could blame me when my mom would leave my long hair down and in a hair bow for games? Inevitably it would be my turn to play pitcher for that given inning and I would stand next to my Mom as she pitched the ball to the little slugger at the plate. One particularly toasty day my Mom looked around and didn't see me next to her. She turned around and there I was...hiding in her shadow.
I wasn't very attentive to the mechanics of the game, but I caught on quickly to the temperature drop that occurred when I stood behind my Mom on the mound. If memory serves me correctly, I think she benched me from there on out for my diva-like tendencies.

Wednesday Ramblings
If it's going to be cold, might as well have a cute jacket to sport around - am I right?
I just love these stylish little duds from Smythe:

In other (completely unrelated) news, I joined a co-ed kickball team! This isn't completely random, seeing as how I was on a co-ed softball team with the same group of guys this past Summer. However, last night was our first game and from the looks of things, I think it's going to be a lot more social. First of all, you lose ALL ability to look athletic when you are getting pegged from behind with a big rubber ball. Also, have you ever tried to throw a kickball? It's absolutely hilarious. Unfortunately, we didn't walk away with a kickball victory last night (9-8) but I'd like to think that it was just our learning curve. Stay tuned for more tales from the field and hopefully a few pics!

Little Squirts

Here we are on "vacation" riding the trolley in Zilker Park. By the looks of things (check out Mom and Nana in the background - sweet hair, gals!) the timing of this picture can most accurately be dated back to the early 90s. Little Taylor looks about 3 or 4 and the random man that is almost out of the frame is wearing a pair of shorts that would make George Michael completely jealous.
My family would go to Austin every Summer for a long weekend getaway to one of our favorite Texas destinations. I have sweet memories of going to the University co-op and buying the newest and best little Texas gear (read: tiny wind shorts with UT on the tail) and taking hundreds of pictures of us giving the "Hook 'Em" sign. It wasn't until my early teens when my family moved to the Austin area that I realized what a love I have for all things Austin...including the Horns. Game day has practically been a holiday in our household and quite frankly, there is no other team that I'd love to cheer for than the favored team of my childhood. Well, except the Aggies, of course :)
Hook 'Em Horns!

Whirlwind.
Warning: it's going to be difficult to cram this weekend into one post, so here goes...
First of all, I will start by saying that I was hyped about this weekend. For so many reasons – utterly hyped. You see, this time last year I was homesick beyond belief after having learned that one of my closest friends had just gotten engaged and that all of my friends would be celebrating this joyous occasion on arguably one of the most fun weekends of the year in Dallas. It was this time last year that I decided once and for all to enjoy my time in New York, but that Texas was calling me home. That, my friends, happens to be TX v. ou weekend. Every year it seems like the build up for this enormous game gets more and more exciting and this year was no exception.
This weekend came complete with two separate Evite invitations for various festivities and I was more than eager to reply my “can’t wait!” sentiment onto each invite. First up, a family-friendly Cajun soiree on Friday night at the Mothershead household. Adrianne’s parents hosted each of us as we sat fireside and caught up on the happenings of our various lives. As we caught up, we realized that we are all just making it rain out there. Houston, Dallas, Austin...we just keep trucking along. Some of us have moved and come back, and yet, we still manage to meet up again - truly one of the best things about the weekend. We moved on to our second location for the night, along with every other 20-something in the state of Texas. We drove around practically begging various valet tenants to let us park in their specific lot, only to decided that it’s next-to-impossible to navigate this weekend when you mix trolley cars, high heels, college co-eds and Dallas residents – and just like that, let the weekend had begun. We made our way into a fantastic karaoke bar which just so happened to be the ultimate in people watching. I tried to convince the girls to sing “All I Have to Give” by the Backstreet Boys, only to get denied. You know, I’m still not even sure if they called my name or not? Anyway, we put Friday night to bed at the ripe hour of 4:30 am, only to set our alarm for for a 7 am wake up call (read: us still trying to live like college students). No rest for the weary, my friends. We had been invited to a joint tailgate on the fairgrounds for Saturday and had decided that it would be the perfect mix of game day and fair festivities – basically a blend of good old fashioned Texas fun. Bailey, Alyssa and I got a slow start to the day on Saturday only to leave our house just before 10 am, park, share a cab with strangers, and still manage to show up to the State Fair of Texas in time for the 11 am kickoff. Talent, pure talent. We pulled up some (borrowed) fold out chairs, munched on various tailgate grub and enjoyed the game from a flat screen in the back of a Tahoe. I know what it sounds like, and no...we were not filming an Alan Jackson video, just simply enjoying the game with other droopy-eyed spectators. After a failed ticket attempt, my roommate Megan joined us both for the tailgate and a day’s worth of Fair fun. We successfully rode the Ferris wheel, ate a week’s-worth of calories in fried goods (see the menu below) and shared the perfect Texas day together. Oh and...the Horns won (!!). So really, God’s country shone a little brighter this weekend...
Up next, the Mavs pre-season game against the Cavaliers! It seems pretty aggressive to spend a day at the fair, nap for almost two hours, freshen and then head to the American Airlines center for a basketball game, but what can I say? We’re just your average sports enthusiasts. The convenience of games are just too good to pass up. You get there and realize that you can sit mindlessly for a few hours and be entertained and over-stimulated on so many fronts. Sure, there’s the actual game but then there is also a plethora of crowd movement that just keeps things interesting. At one point we all realized that each of our eyes were burning and that the condition could have been attributed to several sources:
a. fatigue/exhaustion
b. the flashing lights at the basketball game
c. the smoke from the tailgate/fairgrounds
d. all of the above.
More than likely we were all suffering from pure exhaustion that culminated in a halftime show performed by a Frisbee-chasing collie dog wearing tiny tennis shoes. I kid you not, tears were rolling down our faces as we watched this animal handler in his flag tee run this dog ragged doing figure eight maneuvers on the court. I only wish that I had captured the essence of this talented dog, but unfortunately, this is one memory that will have to remain in my delirious arsenal of random weekend stories. Sorry, friends. We made a group decision to continue our day's worth of culinary mistakes on a late-night Whataburger dinner followed by a midnight viewing of The Proposal under a down blanket...see, we can always find a way to come full circle and return to being women. For the sake of brevity I will say that Sunday was spent going to church, taking Alaina and Alyssa’s puppy to the Dallas Farmer’s Market, choosing a perfect pumpkin (see below for my sweet loner shot!), a matinee movie and the Miley Cyrus Concert – you know, just your average day!
Please see below for an abundance of pics* from the weekend!

Eighties Beats & Super Bowl Meats
I had a great weekend and I hope that y'all did too! Friday night was relatively low-key in the digs of 2D. I made a homemade dinner (read: peanut butter and jelly sand which) after the devastating discovery of my potato having sprouts, thus forgoing my original plan of a warm baked potato.
I know, riveting.
After a failed attempt to cozy up and watch Tropic Thunder with Alyssa, I moved my party into our room and finished Happy Gilmore. They seriously don't make them like they used to. It was a perfect example of how simple humor wins every time. Anyway, I fell asleep at the bustling hour of 10:30 and knew that Saturday had to have more promise. Sure enough, I shot up at 8am and had nothing to do. So I did what every out-of-shape New Yorker does in 18° weather, I went jogging. If it appears that Hell has frozen over, I can assure you, it hasn't. However, Central Park has seemed to. I bundled up in a ragtag outfit of layered assortments and set out. My eyes were watering, my nose was running, and my body was just not moving together...I looked ridiculous. I literally made myself stay active for 45 minutes and then fled the scene. My roomies were still sleeping soundly, so I decided to run a few errands and catch a morning movie that no one else wanted to see. In case you were wondering, New In Town is just okay.
I got home in time to spruce up our place for the party that was taking place in our apartment later that evening. Kate's book club was having their kick-off meeting with a fiesta followed by a night of 80's cover music at the Canal Room. Thanks to the fabulous culinary skills of Ms. Kristin Whitley, our fiesta came complete with wonderful homemade margs and Mexican burritos. We ended the night in 2D with a private fashion show, featuring the likes of a green unitard and an afro wig. Don't think that she didn't wear it out...
Several cab rides later, we ended up at our destination for some serious 80's classics. Several of us made a beeline for the front and got the dance party started. Seriously, how can you not dance to "Take Me Home Tonight"? You can't, I promise. We held our own through several Michael Jackson classics and then called it a night. To be honest, the whole scene was a little reminiscent of Wednesday nights at the Tap spent jamming out to the Spazmatics - oh college life, how I miss thee. And in case you're wondering how to get a room full of coed 20-somethings to dance, throw on some vintage Whitney Houston and you'll see magic happen. For the record, grown men singing "yeaaaah I wanna dance with somebody" never gets old.
The weekend culminated with a Super Bowl party at Micah's apartment. The girls of 2D did not feel entitled enough to throw a football-themed bash since we had not watched a single professional football game all year, so we made the guys do it. You know that dudes are in charge when the menu is as follows: meaty pizza, wings, beer, various chips, and "7-layer" dip (which they happened to mix together). I'm serious, not a single dessert in sight. I couldn't help but wonder what the menu would have looked like had we thrown the party. The poor guys would have had diet coke, chocolate chip cookies and brownies. Due to the dessert-sized void, I decided that my contribution would be a baked good. More than anything, I wanted my addition to be the most popular dish. Who says I'm not competitive? I made brownies (not too done) with mint-flavored icing, think over sized Thin Mint cookie. While they weren't the "it" item (thanks Alyssa), I must say that they were a hit. However, now that I know what it takes to be on top, you can bet that I will show up next year with steak in hand because I will NOT be outdone:)
The company was wonderful, and more importantly, we were able to tackle the real issues of game day: Kurt Warner has aged well, Xuan will invest in a gold toilet someday, Bruce Springstein almost chipped the Penguin's tooth with his guitar swing, Ray Tidwell was the best Cardinals player and monster.com had the best commercial.
So with a heavy heart I say goodbye to the weekend and hello work week...here's to hoping that a new episode of Gossip Girl can waive my Monday blues.
I know, riveting.
